Yesterday the green darner hatched. We looked everywhere. No one could find the green darner. Some kids said the green was dead. Ms.Lenahan was crying. The next day we found the green darner. He was really big! Everyone was excited. His abdomen is brown. His wings are yellow. The green darner is the largest dragonfly. The green darner can fly 53 mph. The green darner can see 360 degrees around it. The green darner can eat a humming bird! That is the amazing green darner!                                                              Go to fullsize image                                           Go to fullsize image

Hello earth I want to tell you about my trip to the refuge. In the morning we were separated in teams. Each team had to do something. Our team toke the temperature of the soil. First we went to the forest. We took the temperature 3cm below the ground. Above the ground and 1m above the ground. Next we went to the field. We did the same thing there. I found a tick on my leg I flicked it off. Then we walked to the pond. We took the temperature there to. Another team found turtle eggs eaten. There was one egg left.

Ms. Lenahan covered the hole. We thought a raccoon ate the eggs. Then we went to lunch. In the afternoon we went bird watching. We saw a lot of birds. I’m not going to write them all because it would take me along time. I’ll name some. I saw a great egret. I saw a brant, killdeer, catbirds, red-winged blackbird, laughing gull, peregrine falcon. We went up in a tower and saw birds. Some people were scared to go up in the tower. Then we left. I didn’t want to leave.

We had praying mantises hatch in our class. There are a lot of praying mantises. I think there are 50 to 100 praying mantises. They are really small. You can barly see them. They keep geting out. The larger group of these insects is more properly called the praying mantids. Praying mantids’ excellent eyesight allows some to see movement up to 60 feet  away. Mantids can turn their heads 180 degrees to scan their surroundings.

I have my own monarch caterpillar!! He or she is one day old. The colors are black and white. They only stay like that for one day. The caterpillar only eats milkweed.  The caterpillar has spikes on its body. The brand new caterpillar eats it’s own egg. It takes 3 days for the caterpillar to hatch. I’m so happy Ms.Lenahan gave me the monarch caterpillar.
